How many times will this story appear? The University supports CCTV to keep students safe, but when I went down the Cowley Road on Wednesday night it was the students who were cycling with no lights and drunk and disorderly- most seemingly enagaged in some fancy dress three legged pub crawl from what I could see as I had to brake heavily as 3 pairs fell into the road. Students don't pay Council tax so why should us working people pay for cameras? Andrew Smith is all for these cameras but he would be wouldn't he? New Labour having turned us into the most watched society on the planet with one camera for every 12 Britons and a fifth of ALL the World's CCTV cameras here. Furthermore, a report this week said that cameras DON'T deter crime and are of very little use when a crime does occur. What might work is a proper, sustained Police crackdown making it clear that criminal or dangerous behaviour will not be tolerated. All this is due to East Oxford being destroyed as a community as buy to let landlords price families out and rent to students and short term economic migrants who have no interest or investment in the community as such. The Cowley Road is a good example of where the entire country is heading- sold off to the interests of the wealthy, communities destroyed and an incompetent government deciding that increased tax and surveillance is the answer. I was born in East Oxford and it makes me angry to see how it's turned into a slum for students and migrants.
