The problem with the 'the innocent have nothing to hide'/'nothing to hide nothing to fear' argument is that it suggests privacy is about hiding bad things. Of course this isn't true. Indeed your concerns about revealing your email address suggest that you realise this - otherwise you would believe that if you've nothing to hide you shouldn't mind revealing your email address to the world.
The nothing to fear argument also goes against the Common Law principle that you are free to do anything that isn't specifically legislated against. It also challenges the fundamental legal principle of 'innocent until proven guilty'.
If you belive the 'nothing to fear argument' holds in relation to CCTV cameras filming law abiding citizens then you could also say:
- If you're not going to do anything criminal, you can't object to being bound over to keep the peace.
- If you're not going to do anything criminal you can't object to being subjected to a curfew order from 11 o'clock at night to 7 in the morning.
- If you're not going to do anything criminal you can't object to being subjected to a tagging order.
