Yawn.... Increase council tax and give us more police then...
Everyone complains about CCTV until they are the victims of crime. CCTV does not reduce crime, but it certainly helps in gathering evidence against the offender.
Some well known murders/ child abductions have been helped by having cctv footage of either vehicle or offender caught on camera. So how would you prove to the courts that someone had been in the area at the time of the incident without any witnesses or forensic evidence to hand? Answer that and you may find a way to get rid of CCTV.
CCTV cameras are governed by RIPA and as such any intrusive survellience requires having to go to a magistrates court and explain why it is proportionate and neccesary. If they are not happy then they will not athorise it.
Cameras are not generally put up in a residential area to protect individuals rights, and rightly so. However sometimes if there is constant problems on a certain road then the need can outwiegh the individuals rights. This of course needs to be proportionate in the circumstances.
Unfortunatly its a complete sorry state of affairs as there are many criminal gangs who get away with many crimes, as the police have their hands tied. Police know who the main criminals are, however tapping phones and like are not allowed so they can go about their business unhindered whilst the rest of us work for our money.
People think there is a big conspiray theory out there where police are out to watch everyone..
Truth is the police are far too busy dealing with domestics, drunken assualts, and putting files together.
There is so much red tape that the police are lame ducks and cant 'police' as people would like.
Simply put.. The public get the police they deserve...
