This statistic is of no use in deciding if CCTV is effective as 90% of all cameras in the are operated and owned by private companies. Local Authority cameras are very active and productive in the fight against crime and the most realistic statistic in relation to cameras is how effective are they when used as evidence. An old study in Nottingham 1990s stated that in all cases prosecuted where cctv had been provided for evidence 99% of perpretrators pleaded guilty. of the 1% that pleaded not guilty and went to court 99% were found guilty at court. The biggest savings to the government have been in terms of guilty pleas where previously offenders pleaded not guilty. This has saved in court time and sped up the process of convictions so much so, that court circulars recommend to Judges a 'Non Custodial Sentence'. You will have seen in the news that, not only do we tag people rather than send them to prison, but now we have sentenced people to wear the dreaded Orange Vest with 'Pay Back' embossed on it. All of this is because of the implementation of Local Authority CCTV cameras success in gaining convictions. The country is not spied on in any way, if so then I am guilty of operating these spies. These cctv Operators enthusiastically go about the working shifts looking for criminals in the act of committing crimes. That is, robbing you in the street, burglarying your house, breaking into your car or your garden shed, molesting you or your children. If you really believe that criminals should be allowed to get away with these crimes then please take the cameras out. If not then please stop being paranoid about who is watching and be grateful that someone is watching out for you.
