Good to see that taxpayers are challenging councils! Here is Dr Villard's letter:
Sir – Just in the last few weeks, three instances of mismanagement of taxpayers’ money have come to my attention, amounting well into a seven-figure sum:
1: Installation of pointless 20mph speed limit panels on side streets (who can even go that fast on those streets?). Furthermore, the enforcement of current speed limits would be enough. A general drop to 20mph all over the city is impractical and exaggerated.
2: Installation of an extensive — and to be increased — network of CCTV cameras for car number plate recognition (Report, August 20). This network is already too big for its stated purpose so we also have a massive issue with erosion of civil liberties.
3: Poor negotiation with the bus companies of the free bus pass scheme for over 60s (Time for a better deal, Letters, August 20).
