Panama City, FL 10/8/07- There’s a blizzard coming to the Florida panhandle this weekend, but with highs in the 80 degree range you may ask how can that be? Well that because it’s the final blizzard series race at the Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida in preparation for the 40th Annual Snowball Derby on December 2nd. Current series points leader Ryan Crane hopes to act as weather man and predict a series championship for himself which would guarantee him, as well as the runner up in the standings, a starting spot in one of the most prestigious short track races in the country.
“We have a twenty-five point lead over second place which is good, but definitely not good enough to not worry about getting a good finish. We have finished second a few times this year but haven’t won one of these races yet, so it would be really nice to go out and win not only the championship but the race too. To be able to finish first or second in the points and be locked in to the derby is huge. I remember a few years ago when Charlie Bradberry didn’t even show up until the race started, started shotgun on the field and came from the back and won the thing, so that’s a perfect example of how important it is to be locked in,” said Crane.
The Honda of Panama race team had originally planned to debut a new pro late model car the same night as the blizzard series in a 50 lap pro late model championship race, but after considering what’s at stake, the decision was made to move that debut to another date. The Ryan Crane Racing team is preparing for a few pro late model events for the remainder of the year including both the $10,000 to win World Crown 300 at Peachstate Speedway in Jefferson, Georgia November 9-11th and one of the fastest growing races in the country the Snowflake 100 on December 1st, a prelude to the 40th Annual Snowball Derby.
“We had kicked around the idea of bringing out the pro late model the same night for the 50 lap race but then talking with my crew chief, Mike Garvey, we decided to hold off on that being that we have a chance to win the championship. We just didn’t want to be spread too thin as a team and not be able to perform the way we should,” stated Crane.
