Ramsey Blisters Field In SOBO 300
Adam Barker came on this year and showed he was the man at South Boston Speedway, looking unbeatable and ultimately winning the track championship. That was, until the last 4 races of the season. Wayne Ramsey came on and reeled off 4 wins in a row to close the season in the LMSC division. At the SOBO 300 on Saturday, he made sure nothing had changed, and kept everyone looking at the rear of his car. From a distance that is.
The day started off with the big story being something we haven't seen in these parts in a while, rain. While Saturday was beautiful, all activities scheduled for Friday had to be done on raceday becuase of persistant downpours. The day started off at 11 a.m. with practice, qualifying, heat races, last chance race and the main event having a 5 p.m. scheduled starting time. A weeping track from the rain would lead to some brave driving throughout the day
When the field was finally set, C.E. Faulk from Charlotte N.C. would lead the field to the green flag. Track champion Adam Barker would line up second, followed by Jonathon Bailey, Ramsey and and Frank Deiny Jr. rounding out the top 5.
Starting 36 cars at South Boston usually means good racing and carnage. And the track didn't disappoint. On lap 1 entering turn 3, the cars of Jonathon Cash, Kevin Wood, Brandon Butler, David Tripplett, Richard Storm and Richard Boswell all found a way to run into each other bringing out the first of 5 cautions in the first 150 laps of the event. all cars were able to continue except for Butler, who had to park his McCray Electric, Race22.com Dodge Intrepid after rear end failure that was progressing from earlier in the day.
The very next restart before one lap is completed, The Romeo Guest Construction #22 driven this week by Jonathon Cash crashed hard into the frontstrech wall, ending what could have been the biggest chance of his career in the LMSC division.
While there were the bump-ups on the track, there was good racing throughout the field in the first half of the event. By lap 34, the top 3 had checked out with 4th, 5th and 6th waging their own battle. The real racing was from 7th thru 18th who were nose to tail and having a war with each other. The likes of Philip Morris, Eddie Johnson, Stacy Puryear, Justin Johnson, Tommy Lemons Jr. and others were beatin and a bangin, but showing respect for each other at the same time. Looking up towards the back of the field here comes another story, the #14 of Rodney Cook who started near the tail of the field is coming, and in a hurry.
While there was good racing all over the track and cars changing positions constantly, it was hard to take your eyes off the #14 Pit Stop Auto Sales car of Cook. His car owner Wayne Carter passed a short time back and Rodney wanted this win badly for him, he was driving like a man possesed. By lap 85 he had moved into the 14th position passing some of the best in the business from deep in the field. By lap 109 into the top 10. Lap 119 9th. By the halfway mark he had charged to the 7th position.
While Rodney was charging, Ramsey was setting up his pray up front. The front 3 had broke away from the field, but Ramsey was showing he had the car to beat. On lap 51 he got by Barker for second and went after Faulk. He caught him and passed him on lap 87 and would never give that spot back and headed into the halfway break.
Lap 150 break: 1.Ramsey 2.Faulk 3.Deiny 4.Morris 5.Justin Johnson 6.Timothy Peters 7.Rodney Cook 8.Jonathon Bailey 9.Jamey Caudill 10.Stacy Puryear
As the second 150 laps began, it was evident what was going to be happening for the last 150. The cars of Ramsey, Faulk and Barker were in their own league. The car of Deiny was fading and Morris, Johnson and Cook were coming. The usually strong car of Deiny seemed to make changes at halfway, and went the wrong way on the car. On lap 183 Deiny tries to block Morris and Morris simply moves him out of the way. Lap 189, the cars of Johnson and Cook get underneath Deiny and push him back to 6th.
Another point to note of the second 150 laps was the lack of cautions. While the first half was plagued with wrecks and blown motors, the second half had only one lazy spin by Deac McCaskill on lap 227 causing no damage. This allowed Ramsey and Faulk to stretch their legs and pull away from the field.
Barker had been with the top 3 but suddenly found himself in the clutches of Morris shortly after halfway. Their wasn't a lot of racing throughout the field in the second half, but the battle between Morris and Barker made up for it. For nearly the last 100 laps of the race, Barker on top and Morris on the bottom, lap after lap. Morris finally made the pass with 15 to go, and held on to the end for 3rd while Johnson gets by Barker with 2 to go for 4th.
At The Finish 1.#51 Ramsey(gone) 2.#40 Faulk 3.#26 Morris 4.#54 Johnson 5.#1 Barker 6.#14 Cook 7.#3 Drew Herring(great charge after early wreck) 8.#11 Peters 9.#71 Scott Young 10.#4 Frank Deiny Jr.(last car on lead lap)
