High Point, NC ~ After the cold winter months the racing season is upon us once again. The running of the UARA Tour "Whitley Truck Equipment 150" at the Concord Motorsports Park will take place on Saturday March 29th. And I for one can't wait. Heck, I even cancelled our annual camping trip of 10 years to Martinsville for the Cup race for this one, it is sure to be a race no one should miss.
The whole Race22.com clan made the trip down to Concord Motorsports Park for "media day" last Sunday. A nice group of about 17 late-models took to the track for testing for the upcoming racing season at Concord. Or were they? Of the late-models that were there, I figure about 14 of those will be UARA regulars with the others probably attempting atleast the Concord race. Other classes practicing included the Limiteds, Pure Stock, Fast And Furious Fours, and a few Thunder Roadsters. We were treated by the biggest (and most disturbing) highlight of the day, Doc Love doing the "chicken dance", we will have video of that soon(???), you don't want to miss it. The day was accident free and produced some fast times by a few a the UARA regulars. Of the times that some were putting up, and some that have tested recently, I'd say the season opener will be one of the tightest and fastest fields on record.
The champ, Ross Furr was there, but not in the new Marlowe chassis car he will be running in the UARA. He had an older car out, and was shaking it down to possibly make a run at the regular season opener the this weekend at Concord. Jake "The Snake" Crum was there, in a newly beautiful painted #1 with a snake wrapping around the number of the car and as always he was wide open and fast. A few of the other notables that were fast included Clint Mills, Darryl Wallace Jr., Nick Losito, Dillon Smith and 2007 Concord champion, Chuck Crump, who also plans on running the UARA season opener also.
There are many qestions being asked as the first race approaches. Can defending champion Ross Furr be on his game once again? Will the new "young guns" of 2008 steal the thunder? Will the returning Jamey Caudill return to the series with the form that has made him the all-time wins leader? Will the smooth youngster Matt DiBenedetto make a return to the series at all this year? Could this year be the invasion of JR Motorsports?
All of these questions can't be answered until the final checkered flag falls at Concord in October, but they will all start to shed some light on March 29th. The whole Race22.com staff will once again be on site for the most anticipated season opener to date, we look forward to having you join us.
