After an exciting season opener at the Concord Motorsports Park, the stars and cars of the UARA head to the high country of Virginia for round two of the 2008 season, 150 laps at the beautiful Motor Mile Speedway.
After the wild action at Concord, this weekend should bring more of the same. Ross Furr will be going in as an early favorite after winning the season opener, but the man beating on his bumper at the end of the last race, Jake Crum, should be right there again. Shaun Mangum who flexed a lot of muscle at Concord, is on the entry list and has people in the garage already talking. And who could leave the winner of the last time the UARA visited in 2006, Jamie Yelton. Yelton was on a rail that day leading all 150 laps en route to the win. Throw in 2007 series championship runner-up B.J. Mackey, all-time tour wins leader Jamey Caudill, former Bristol and Martinsville 300 winner Alex Yontz, and all the talented rookies of 2008, and you have one heck of a race on your hands my friends.
One of those rookies looking to rebound this week will be Darrell Wallace Jr. He was going into the season as the one to beat for the Melling Rookie Of The Year honors, but a practice crash and another during the qualifying race at Concord had him watching the main event from the sidelines. Look for him to come back with a vengence at Motor Mile, looking to take a page out of the Ross Furr 2007 season scrapbook, he missed the first race last year and came back to be crowned champion. Other strong rookies in his way include Kyle Moon, Thomas Hartensveld and Andrew Carlsen. Top finishing Concord rookie Cliff Daniels is not "supposed" to be at Motor mile this week, he and sister Tiffany have said they will alternate weeks in the car, but after his great 9th place run at Concord you could very well be seeing two cars out of the Daniels stables trying to make the same race this week.
After the 45 car showing at Concord 2 weeks ago, this week looks to be just as strong. What will the storyline be on Saturday night? Can Furr start the season out 2 for 2? Will Yelton show the dominace of 2 years ago? Does Jake Crum have enough to get one more spot and win? Will Roger Lee Newton be as strong this week as last race coming from last to finish 3rd? Will someone from the unbelievable rookie class break through? Be at Motor Mile Speedway to see first hand. And as always, check www.Race22.com for all your post race interviews, photos, video, and race recap. See ya at the races.
