Radford, VA ~ While the RACE22.com crew was busy giving their full attention to the UARA-STARS Late Model Stock Car touring series this week at Motor Mile Speedway, there was plenty of other racing action on the track for the Late Model Stock Cars and we've got plenty to talk about.
Starting with some Friday night action at Ace Speedway in Altamahaw, NC where Scotty Warren and Rodney Cook put on a show for the final laps after Jason York, who had the dominant car for much of the race, broke while leading taking out second place running, Speedy Faucette. Cook had the lead and control of the race on the final lap after passing Warren for the lead, but Warren not to be denied took his car back to the point with a cross over move and took home his sixth career win at Ace Speedway and denying two time and defending track champion, Cook of a victory, which would have been his first of the season. Robert Turner finished third after Jason Payne was disqualified handing fourth to Joseph Turner and fifth to Speedy Faucette in the 11 car field.
Tri-County Motor Speedway was also in action on Friday night with their season opening 100-lap race and former UARA series and Hickory Motor Speedway track champion, Matt McCall took home the victory in the first of the Triple Crown races with the second scheduled for July 4th. McCall, who swept the season opening twin races at Southern National Raceway Park in Kenly, NC only to be disqulaified, passed post race technical inspection and collected his first official win of the season behind the wheel of the Pig Rig Ford Fusion. Following him to the finish line was two time and defending Hickory Motor Speedway track champion, Andy Loden, who is running both TCMS and HMS in pursuit of the NASCAR North Carolina State Title for the Whelen All-American Series. Lee Tissot, who is just coming off of a Sunday where he first finished in the top 10 at Motor Mile then finished second at Newport Speedway(all in the same day) finished third in the season opener followed by Travis Swaim and Sam Watts.
Chad Mullis took his second win in a row at Concord Motorsport Park besting a short eight car field and beating defending track champion, Chuck Crump, Kevin Love, Terry Brooks Jr and David Currier Jr. to the finish line. Newport Speedway held twin 35-lap Limited Late Model races with several Late Model Stock Car drivers stepping back to run this race with 2007 LMSC track champion, Burt Cable taking race #1 and Kaleb Pressley took race number 2. Pressley's cousin, Coleman, son of former NASCAR driver, Robert Pressley took his first win of the season down at the Greenville Pickens Speedway, where he was able to hold off 24 other snarling beast to win the LMSC feature. Pressley was followed to the stripe by 2007 track champion, David Roberts, Austin Dillon, Marty Ward and Kenneth Headen.
On the other Late Model Stock Car NASCAR track in South Carolina, the Myrtle Beach Speedway held their first race of the 2008 season with Brent Brinson returning to sweep both races.(we'll have more on Myrtle Beach later in the week) Doug Godsey, who won last week at Southern National Raceway Park, had the lead in hand and looked to be on the way to victory again until he lost the lead late to Kyle Hall. Hall went on to win over Godsey, Sherman Davis, Ryan Rhodes and 2007 Old Dominion Speedway track champion, Michael Hardin. Just up I-95 in Virginia, Langley Speedway got their season off to a great start with 19 Late Model Stock Cars in the first race for LMSC in several years. Former South Boston regular, Nick Smith opened the season with a win over Danny and Greg Edwards with Shawn Balluzzo and Anthony Warren rounding out the top five finishers.
Over on the western side of Virginia a battle raged on at Franklin County Speedway with Jimmy Mullins outdueling Rodney Cook for his second straight win. Cook, like at Ace Speedway swapped the lead late with Mullins, but came up a little short when the checkered flag fell over the 15-car field. Track promoter, Richard Gluth has really helped the track gain a lot of new Late Model Stock Cars and has brought what used to be a dead division back to having consistent double digit fields even in this economical down time. Cook followed Mullins to the line as he was chased by former Motor Mile Speedway track champion, Rick Sigmon, 2007 Limited track champion, Travis Hurt and Nathan Wheat.
Hickory Motor Speedway was also in action this weekend with Kyle Grissom proving that it was a good week to be the son of a former NASCAR driver as he also collected his first win of the 2008 season. Grissom was followed to the line by young David Latour, Jr., Mark Johnson, Andy Loden and James Goff while pole sitter, Andy Mercer finished seventh.
Sheeeewww .... That was a lot of good racing action and check back all week as we add to this story by bringing you inside information on what happened as only RACE22.com can do!
