I imagine what happened there was someone was actually paying attention and counting laps properly....however, they probably said "When the St. Mary's girl comes through again, fire the gun lap" and turns out the next St. Mary's girl they saw was second place with 2 laps to go. Whether that's what happened or not, there's no excuse for it.
