I disagree. At the high school level, there isn't a set national competition like in college. New Balance is not "THE" national championship, but it is "A" national championship. Since there are several "national championship" races in high school, I'd said, yes, Burcham is A national champion and not THE national champion, but still a national champion. New Balance looks like there may not be qualifying standards, but they don't just let anyone run the top races. It looks like they only let legit kids run the "championship" race.
In football and basketball, you can have the same argument with team rankings and all-american status. You can be on one list and not another, but still claim that particular ranking/AA status.
