Posted by Linda on June 8, 2007, 9:22 am Sorry to repost this but more people needed to view it! THE FIGHT IS NOT OVER: THE FIGHT AGAINST AB 1634 (THE CALIFORNIA PET EXTINCTION ACT) IS NOT OVER. This was the Assembly skirmish. The final vote tonight on the Assembly floor was 41 YES to 38 NO. Tomorrow we start campaigning in the Senate. We (there are several groups vigorously involved in this battle) will be asking you to help, so when we do, please respond. Faxes and phone calls don't have to take a lot of time - the same fax can be sent to all, and a phone call takes about 15 seconds. Numbers count. This draconian bill has awakened the "sleeping tiger" of the animal owning public to the threat that the "animal rights" movement is to their keeping of their animals, and the tiger's tail has only just begun to wag. More and more people are joining us in the fight every day - including state and national breed organizations, breed clubs, rescue groups, animal professionals, law enforcement officers, veterinarians, and many other reputable people are joining us and voicing their opposition. WHAT HAPPENED TODAY - PROCEDURALLY: Votes are traded in the legislature like baseball cards - "I'll give you one if you give me one". All of the Assembly members have bills they want passed by Friday 6/8 or those bills are dead, and they need votes from other legislators to get their own bills passed. So 38 NO votes on this bill is a very impressive turnout for our side. This bill passed the Assembly tonite with the bare minimum number of votes it needed - Levine didn't have the 41 votes he needed as of lunchtime, but he was able to get those 4 additional votes as a result of some serious party line arm twisting after the floor vote today. The 4 votes that tilted the scale for Levine were all Democrats, who had turned their phones off by dinner, even though the floor session was to go late into the night - that was a very telling sign. I am told we got the one Republican who originally voted yes to change his vote to no - and that is a great accomplishment. Thank you to everyone who called and faxed the 8 abstainers throughout the day, and a special thank you to those who called Mr. Spitzer's office this evening. WHERE WE GO FROM HERE: DO NOT BE DISCOURAGED. It's ok to be angry for about 10 minutes, scream into your pillow, then suck it up and get back to work . We lost the Assembly skirmish today, but the fight is not over. The bill now goes to the Senate, where it has to be approved by the Senate committees ( Business and Professions, then Appropriations where it gets voted on each time) and, if it passes out of the committees, then it goes to the Senate Floor. If it passes the Senate floor it goes to the Governor. So we have at least 2 more shots (at least 1 committee and the Senate Floor) to fight again. We will have more information probably tomorrow with the next steps for you to take to keep up the fight. For those of you who wrote, faxed and called when you were asked to do so - THANK YOU. ---------------------------------------------------- State Capitol, Room 4061 Los Angeles Office Administrative Offices East ---------------------------------------------------- State Capitol Nevada City Office Satellite offices State Capitol, Room 3092 District Office 1057 MacArthur Blvd. Suite 206 State Capitol, Room 3076 Sacramento, CA 95814 Phone: 916-651-4012 Fax: Merced Office Modesto Office Salinas Office State Capitol, Room 5061 Bakersfield Office 1800 30th Street, Fresno Office 2550 Mariposa Mall, State Capitol Costa Mesa ---------------------------------------------------- Senator Joe Simitian State Capitol, Room 2080 Santa Cruz District Office ---------------------------------------------------- State Capitol, Room 4048 San Francisco Office 455 Golden Gate Avenue, Suite 14200 San Mateo Office 400 South El Camino Real, Suite 630 ---------------------------------------------------- Committee meets on 2nd and 4th Mondays according to their website.
