Magnolia 'exotic star' is a hybrid of grandiflora and sieboldii. I planted it in June and it has bloomed its head off. Every branch bloomed, and its putting on new growth. I love this tree.
Sabal 'louisiana'.. I planted these a bit too late (last week) to replace a needle that croaked last year. I plan to protect these (there are two palms in the pic) under a cold frame with burlap and leaves.
This is the back of my yard. I filled them with shrubs that hopefully will take the wettish soil and stay evergreen. The one in a cage at the front is a hibiscus 'Moy Grande' from plant delights nursery. There is also Ilex glabra, Magnolia virginiana, Myrica pensilvanica, and Illicium parviflorum. To the left of those (a bit higher terrain) is cornus angustata, ilex nellie stevens, and osmanthus americanus (in the white cage behind the holly.
The musa basjoo is 5 ft tall now.. in front of it there is a rock garden with some tender agaves stuck in their pots for the summer.
Part of the palm/yucca collection in the front lawn. the two sabal minor 'mcurtain' recovered from total defoliation and have 2 new leaves so far.
My favorite: the needle palm. I protect it with burlap and leaves and it only suffers minor damage (spotting). By midsummer it is completely recovered.
Finally, a part of the cactus garden...
