The Texas Department of Criminal Justice announced that Rick Thaler, the Director of Manufacturing & Logistics Division, will be the next director of the Texas prison system. The announcement came late on July 8, 2009 that Thaler would be the next CID Director.
The position became available after Nathanial Quarterman announced his planned retirement. The 3 final applicants that made the cut were:
Jackie Edwards (Director of Administrative Review & Risk Management Division)
Rodney Cooper (Deputy Director of TDCJ CID Prison and Jail Operations)

The AFSCME organization welcomes Director Rick C. Thaler on board and wishes the best for Nathanial Quarterman in retirement.
Nathanial Quarterman’s strong support for TDCJ correctional officer’s pay raises was greatly welcomed by the AFSCME organization. We hope that Director Thaler will carry on the same support for TDCJ employees this next legislative session.
