TOZ Fishing Team of Gordon and Greaney Place 13 Out of Over 200
Austin, Texas: The Texas Outdoor Zone Fishing Team or better known as TOZ took 13th place at the Lake LBJ Bass Champs Central Division tournament on Saturday April 5. The weather was cool and partly cloudy as the anglers fished for a $20,000 first place check and more.
“We only found three of the fish we knew about. One was exactly where we had seen her in practice, the others were in our zone but just couldn’t find the numbers,” team captain Don Gordon explained. “We fished hard all day, and when we couldn’t get the crank bait (H2O Blue/Chartreuse CRS) bite to continue we went deep and slow with plastics. It was tough, and Lake LBJ is so small we knew we would be crowded and have to deal with secondary water.”
TOZ Team member Cody Ryan Greaney: “I like to fish a bit faster than my partner so our styles can compliment each other on some days……this was one of those days. We fished hard plastics (H2O Express) till about 1 pm. Then Don put the wammy on them with his drop-shot. He is a master at the slow and sensitive tap-tap-tap of the drop shot. I learn a lot with him every time we go out. But he knew we had to drop back and go deep and slow.”
With only three fish in the boat TOZ Team of Gordon and Cody Ryan were not expecting to take a check. “We know when you fish with anglers at this level you have to put five fish in the boat to take a check, unless they are heavy fish for that lake.” Total team weight for Gordon and Cody Ryan went 12.10 on three fish. The winning weight for the day was an even 18 lbs. with a five fish limit.
TOZ Team of Robby Crabb and captain Brian Booker interestingly enough weighed in a three fish limit at 7.3 lbs and placing in the top half of the field. “We fished hard all day and just could not get that number four and number five fish. It was very frustrating but we learned a lot and LBJ is a tough lake to fish with all those anglers vying for the same water,” TOZ Team member Crabb said. His partner Booker explained it this way “we fished this lake on a couple different pre-fish visits and the bite was different each time. One time you could throw a H2O Model D Firetiger, and the next time you are throwing an H20 Shadtreuse suspending jerk bait along the docks – it was never consistent. We knew we would have to deal with that and we were ready for it, just two bites shy.”
