The first group of United States Veterans to get screwed over were probably the ones who fought under George Washington during the revolution. Nothing has changed since then. The government is always in a constant battle with veterans to cut costs and benefits. Our only weapons to counteract this is our votes and veterans organizations that keep the pressure on the politicians.
I do believe that veterans are now getting better help and benefits than World War II or Korean veterans received. And, more veterans are now applying for help. However, the Veterans Administration is a bloated buracracy. At the Veterans Hospital that I go to for appointments, I could count 50 people at any given time that are sitting doing either make work jobs or jobs that duplicate other jobs---or, they are simply sitting on their behinds and not working at all. I see it with my own two eyes---and these people are immune from being fired or laid off as federal employees. The veteran probably only ends up with 25% of every dollar the government allocates to the VA---the rest goes on the buracracy and those thousands and thousands of federal employees and their astronomical benefits.
Well, at least I have noticed that there is more media coverage about veteran's affairs now---and also it is now politically correct to like and want to do the right thing for veterans---so it's harder now for the politicians to cut back on the money. Of course, with the returning influx of veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan---and the billions of dollars more that is going to be needed by the VA---a real money crunch is probably coming. Whatever we are getting from the VA at this time---I guess we probably should appreciate.
