It hurts to see those topless trunks. I lost my 5' torreyi this year and a good chance on my 3'rostrata(the verdict is still out). Your gloriosa looked like it had a nice trunk started, a painful sight, but I guess we always know in the back of our minds that there will be winters like this one to wipe some things out.
The strangest part of all is that all the snow cover and crappy cold that wreaked havic on the yuccas seemed to protect the roots on my melianthus major. This is the first time I've ever had all of them come back from the roots - even with mulch. Go figure.
