Have tried these (quadrangulatum) several times. They live for about a year on what they have stored up in their tissues then die. Have never tried a small one though. Have gotten some other field grown or wild collected Dasylirions as adult plants and they almost always do the same thing. I think that any Dasylirion bought in a pot or as a well rooted smaller plant will make good specimens.
