Rob, I have 3 in total and 1 thompsoniana. I am lucky to have very sandy soil, so I didn't amend all that much. But what I did do is dig the hole and then when the yucca is put in the hole backfill with native soil mixed in with builders sand, pea gravel and crushed clam shells. I also made sure it was slightly raised from the surrounding soil line. On top of the soil is a circular top layer around the stem/trunk of pea gravel. I've had my oldest 1 since '99 and it was transplanted from our old house to where I am now in '04. It was dug up in early January and re-planted in 4-04, never skipping a beat. It now stands close to 8-9 feet tall from a small 1 1/2 foot plant back in 5/99. |
