17 YEARS of TROPICAL AND DESERT PLANTS
Yucca sp. 'Coventy, RI'

A few more photos from the colony if Yuccas in Coventry, Rhode Island. Any thoughts where these Yuccas are native to? They have very tiny seed pods which are constricted in the middle. Are these found in NC?

Hi Tim, nice find. These little seed pots are interesting. Are there only a few seeds inside or very small seeds? The hole from the Yucca moths remind me of some seed pots I got from a colleague who traveled around Las Vegas this year. When I opened them I found around 10 small red caterpillars. I took them out but I think they didn't survive. Regards Eckhard

I have found any caterpillars inside yet, I guess the pod you received was picked early. Did the seed germinate?

Hi Tim, yes, the first seeds I 've sown germinated after a really short time. Some more are stored for next year. Unfortunately I don't know the relating Yucca to this seed. Wish you a nice Sunday.

the Rhode Island ones look very much like North Carolina ones only perhaps the leaves are a bit less quickly terminated. The fruits are also less inflated. Have seen pics of other northern concava that have the leaves more recumbent than the Rhode Island pics. That's the way I recall the NJ ones. Your pics look more similar to NC than NJ. All of this just general observation and not very scientific though. Cool plants!

Hi Don, are the NC seed pods tiny too? Most RI pods are 7/8" to 1-1/2" long, constricted too.

according to the pdf I posted earlier about 1 3/8 inches (35mm). Am sure there's considerable variation in size though.
