17 YEARS of TROPICAL AND DESERT PLANTS
some new yuccas
Posted by Don on April 24, 2017, 4:41 pm
Have been trading fossils for xerophytes with a collector from west Texas. Have gotten a few baccata and now he is sending some constricta. The baccata came in with some Agave lechugilla so assume this plant is an extreme xerophyte. The constricta may be a little less xeric from what I've googled. Any advice on keeping these yuccas?

Hi Don, for me Y. baccata is the same than for Tim. After planting it slowly dies. I have one planted out since 4 years and now I'll take it out and put it back into a pot. Y. constricta so far grows fine in my area but I'm not sure what happens during a really cold winter. Good luck with these plants. They could be real beauties but they are also very sensitive to wrong growing conditions. Eckhard

Baccata does not enjoy our climate. I've tried some and even seed. I have none currently. They seem to slowly die in our climate. Constricta seems variable as I've seen different forms over the years. I have a constricta but it dies back to the ground every few winters. A beautiful yucca in my opinion.

Thanks for the advise fellows. I have the baccata in clay pots filled with lava rock and a little soil. The constricta came in yesterday and I planted one in sand on the west side and one amongst rocks on the south side. The 8 remaining constricta are in well draining potting soil in pots to hopefully root.

Nice! Constricta is one of the most beautiful Yuccas, you'll enjoy it very much.

some googling states that constricta doesn't transplant well and should be started from seed. Mine aren't dead yet!
