Re: Sad news from the Bramletts....
It was a Saturday morning in early September of 1957 and Walter Beeland, Charles Ray Gibbs and I as usual were riding our bikes around town. We had probably gone to the old football field where the Bearcats had played their first game of the season to look for coins under the stands and for any other treasures we might find. Eventually we went to the high school gym to see if it was open so we could play a some basketball. It happened to be open and after we had played basketball a while a rather large (to us) man came out of the men’s dressing room on the northeast side of the gym. He asked us if we’d like to help him with a job for a little while. We said sure and he took us down into the dressing room where he was washing the uniforms from the previous nights game by hand in the showers. We helped him for a few hours and he asked if we’d like to be managers for the football team. As sixth graders, we didn’t know what it meant to be managers but that’s what we became. To seal the deal and to thank us for our help he bought us each a hamburger and milk shake from the Tastee Freeze. We were managers for the next three years working with many fine and wonderful players and one of the finest ever, Coach Bramlett. Life was good. RIP, Coach
