Re: Vaccinations photo
Because we have these ladies in the picture—I think they were representatives of the Womens’ Clubs in Forest—along w/Mr. Atkins and Mr. Bishop, that indicates to me that this was probably the first polio vaccines. These photos are just priceless in that that they depict a really historic event in our history—that of the vaccine for polio being made widely available and also we see some of the fine leaders of our City of Forest showing their support for this important event. I also remember going to the high school cafeteria for the sugar cube vaccine one cold and breezy Sunday after church and standing in a long line waiting to get the vaccine. As for “names”—Perhaps the lady right behind Mrs. Lackey may be Frances(Vincent)Boutwell and next to her may be Mrs. Jewel Smith and moving onto the right, maybe Jean Palmer and then Mrs. Max Mitchell on the end of the row—am making “educated” guesses w/some of these ladies— their faces look so familiar, but have to dig “way back” to come up w/ the names. As for the nurses—I seem to remember Mrs. Baggett’s name being “Bess” and I think the second nurse may be Mrs. Nadine Burroughs instead of Miss Opal. I remember that Mrs. Burroughs worked at the Health Department. Many Thanks, Glenda for our photo library.
