What relation are these two people

To man are walking down the street past the town theater and a man yells at them from a jail cell. Hey come get me out of jail. One of the men looks at the other one and says Brothers and sisters I have none but that man’s father is my father‘s son . What is the relationship between the man in jail and the man on the street?

Trying to figure that relationship out is hurting my head, but I do get a clear image of two men walking down the street by the old jail near Town Theater of our hometown. In fact, it was not all that unusual for someone to yell out from the barred windows of a cell! Scared me sometimes.
The “obvious” answer would probably be that the inmate is a half brother or something like that....so THAT thought is totally wrong! I think the answer will be found by asking “who is technically the father’s son?”

I have seen The riddle before and didn't remember the answer. My brain hurt, too. I cheated and the Internet told me the answer.

I was afraid to say.....but “my father’s son” was the key.
