Re: Newsletter is going electronic, What are your thoughts
Since this option first came up I have talked to a large number of members. Two members flatly told me they would drop if they did not get a hard copy. When asked with this as the only option most opted for the electronic newsletter but when the option of exploring other and cheaper means of getting a hard copy, all felt it would be a mistake to make a change without at least exploring other options. With that in mind all opted for a hard copy first, With that in mind I suggest that we put off the current news letter for several weeks and explore those options. Also because of questions that have been asked about the value of an auction in the newsletter I would like to hear options about that. Mary and I feel that the auction is a very valuable part of the PGCA and strongly urge that this be looked at very carefully before steps are taken to make the auction go away. Mary and I are getting older and frankly worn out. We have given 3 years notice that we would discontinue the auction and after two years no viable alternative has been set forward. As most of you know the auction is a private venture as the PGCA's original charter prohibited the PGCA from holding an auction as three of our original members were currently holding auctions and did not want competition from the PGCA. Is it time to put this to a vote of our entire membership and change that? If a yes vote, then who would run it and who would do all the work. At the request of one of our members I ran some numbers. Based on a $5000 auction of which we seldom have, most are in the $3000 range. But based on a $5000 auction and taking into account all of the work involved Mary and I are each making about $4.18 an hour. I can supply the figures if needed. This does not take into account my picking up and delivering glasses. Any one want to sign up? I would expect the two or three people out there who have been making all the remarks about the "fat hog" we have, to step up first. Or to at least have the courage to call and say "sorry." We have several large consignments we are obligated to sell and we will live up to those obligations. After that someone who knows how to do it better can take over. Carl
