Heck, I could even see a possibility of a team figuring out a way to make a squib kick do something funny, and setting it up as a sort of surprise onside kick. Again, the chance of success would be pretty minimal, but never zero.
I recall years ago, the Packers had an onside kick play where they kicked a pop-up type kick, designed to land about 20-30 years downfield - past the first line of defense, but ahead of the second wave - with the hope being that their guy could sprint down and run under it before their guys could react. I seem to recall it actually worked once. I could see something like that making a comeback too.
I wouldn't be surprised at all if at the beginning of this season, we see some screwy things happening while some of the more creative special teams coaches come up with ways to take advantage of the rule. Of course, everyone will catch up once they see it happen, and we'll be back to status quo...
