Last year, the NFL Draft received 54.4M viewers over the three day event. For perspective, The NBA Finals got 11.6M and the World Series got 9.9M. And while I'm a huge draft nut, I recognize that some people, even hardcore NFL fans, barely have any idea who the players are being drafted. They watch it because it's something to do, fun to dream about what their team could be, etc etc.
But what if the NFL could host a similar event, but they players everyone knows.
Imagine if NFL Free Agency were a televised event. Here's my proposal that'll never come true.
When NFL Free Agency opens, teams are allowed to submit contract proposals to the NFL League offices. After all proposals have been submitted, the NFL selects the top three contracts for each FA based on average annual salary. Players are then allowed to review/negotiate the contracts for more specific details. If a player doesn't receive three offers, they are subject to traditional signings at a later date.
The NFL then announces the top 100 free agents based on AAV and the three eligible offers. The NFL then hosts a two night event where the top free agents come on stage and sit at a table with the hats of the three teams with the best offers. The Free Agent sits at the table, pauses for dramatic effect, and selects the hat of the team they're signing with.
It's like National Signing day for high school recruits, but for the pros.
Again, there are a MILLION reasons why it'll never happen. But can you IMAGINE how many viewers would tune into that. It'd be bananas.
Royalty checks can be made out to UDub from Parts Unknown.
