Obviously there would be competition throughout the offseason but looking at his profile, I'm not so sure it's clear cut.
I've long said I don't think he's a tackle. The number of good OTs in the league with sub 33" arms is Kaleb McGary and that's it. To be fair, he has 32 7/8" arms, compared to Zach Tom and Bryan Bulaga who both have 33 1/4". So is that 3/8" that big a deal? Maybe. But I think he's a backup swing tackle rather than a starter early in his career.
Center is the position he's most projected to be. But I'm still not sure that's his best position. He's 6'5 and 313 lbs which for the center position would be the 96th percentile and the 90th percentile. He's a big boy which isn't always a good thing at the Center position. The ideal center is shorter along the OL because they have to get low to snap the ball, they have to win with leverage, and that's hard to do for taller guys. Now to be fair, Creed Humphry is 6'4 303 so he's within the ballpark of the best C in football. But I have my concerns at Center.
I honestly think his best landing spot will be guard, especially at LG. While he's played multiple positions, he's primarily been a LT at Duke so kicking him inside on the left would probably be his best spot. While Sean Rhyan is a completely different profile to Barton, we've seen taking guys from LT and putting them at RG is not an easy transition. And putting Barton at RG next to Zach Tom who has a very similar profile would be a very unique tandom on the right side.
If GB lands Barton, I wouldn't be opposed to seeing him play at LG and kicking Elgton Jenkins over to RG. We THINK Barton can play multiple positions along the OL but we KNOW Elgton certainly can.
I'm not saying it's the most likely outcome if GB takes him, but I wouldn't put it beyond the Packers to try it out in camp.
