Just to be clear, this is still based on my basic belief that OT >>> Edge Rusher in the grand scheme of importance to a football team's success. And as far as quality of player: so far, Jones (currently starting at RT for Pittsburgh) has been AT LEAST as good at RT as Van Ness has been as an Edge.
Van Ness has shown flashes, but has also disappeared for long stretches. Conversely, an OT plays every... single... snap for the offense - and if they disappear/take a play off/etc., it's likely to be a sack or TFL (or worse). Take that, add to it our current total dearth of OT depth behind the starters (because they inexplicably put Morgan at G), and you have my opinion summed up. OT was the pick there. And Gute blew it.
And before any of the usual suspects get their undies in a bunch, I am NOT saying "FIRE GUTE!!!" I think he's done (doing) a great job. But even the best miss one sometimes. And he missed this one. And unless Jones falls off a cliff (no indication of that happening - everything I've read on Jones is 'he's got a great future', or Van Ness suddenly becomes Reggie White (also no indication of that happening) - as long as the two players stay pretty even, then I will continue to believe Gute missed this one because again, OT >>> Edge in the grand scheme of importance to a football team's success.
