It started at the end of June, when I went to the Immediate Care, thinking I have a UTI or something because I just couldn’t stop peeing. Felt perfectly fine otherwise. They check my blood sugar; it's over 450. They say, basically, "Go to ER, or you could die."
So I go to the ER. They run a bunch of tests. One thing that stood out to me: the nurse ran down a laundry list of symptoms (like they always do). But I could tell by her reactions that she was getting more and more flabbergasted by me not having any symptoms at all - it was like she couldn't understand why I was so healthy overall with a blood sugar over 450 (which they rechecked and confirmed right when I got there).
So in the end, they give me insulin; 15 minutes later, my sugar went from 450+ to 250. They discharge me, and say “follow up with your dr”. Doctor puts me meds (but no ongoing insulin, thank God); also I immediately start making some pretty significant changes - MAJOR reductions in sugar intake, paying a lot more attention to carbs, and also pretty big increases in physical activity. I also engage with the dieticians/Diabetes health education program through my dr office, and just overall start paying a lot more attention to my health. Also, I have to start checking my sugar level daily. Real fun...
But between the meds and all the work I'm doing, from the first sugar check (which was 250), I start seeing decreases. And it has kept dropping, until starting at around August 1, it has been consistently 115 or less. I had a dietician/education visit on Friday. My numbers have been looking so good, and the changes I've made have really paid off, that the dietician recommended reducing meds already. Doctor agreed, and makes huge cuts to both of my meds!!
Not where I want to be yet, but it's working. And I couldn't be happier with how it's gone. Just have to keep at it. Which is the biggest challenge now - the discipline to keep going. But I have to say this: it's one thing to hear "you're pre-diabetic and you should do some things differently"; it's quite another thing to hear "you could die right now if you don't do something". Definitely not lacking in motivation right now...
