Someone described it to me this way: "Dietary change/nutrition is the engine of weight loss. Exercise is like taking that engine and adding a turbocharger - it can help accelerate the process, but without the 'engine' of dietary change, the 'turborcharger' of exercise won't work". Another way to put it: "You can't out-work bad eating habits."
