If the "ground cannot cause a fumble", then why can the ground cause an otherwise completed pass to be incomplete?
It really gets on my nerves when a guy goes to the ground making a catch. Has a solid grasp on the ball all the way to the ground. But for whatever reason, the ball comes loose when he hits the ground. Boom - incomplete.
Kind of in line with what I said above: I think that as long as you're not juggling the ball at the moment you would be ruled down (whether by contact or going out of bounds), then that should be a catch. We see guys all the time make great catches, hold it all the way through the process, then the ground knocks it loose, and suddenly it's incomplete.
IMO, if "the ground can't cause a fumble", then "the ground shouldn't be able to cause an incomplete pass".
Otherwise, why do runners not have to maintain control of the ball 'through the process of going to the ground'?
