So you are implying that their ego gets in the way. Which I guess is always going to be the case. Imagine giving your all to something, and actually contributing to the cause and advancing it. When suddenly, you are cast aside, after pouring all of your energy into it at the detriment of other things in your life. That's got to hit like a hammer to the head.
