it was intentional
it is brilliant
the surface at Camp Randall at the time is what allowed the coaches to call the play, it was old school astroturf and the team practiced on it every day, and it had a predictable bounce, unlike a grass filed would, so they took advantage.
One of the greatest trick play designs ever concocted.
