Banks - $77 million - can't stay on the field, and hasn't exactly been all-pro even when he has played.
Hobbs - $48 million - has basically played his way to the bench.
Yikes!!
After the successes of the Smith Bros, Amos, and a handful of other guys, you hoped this wouldn't happen, but there's always a chance with big $$ FAs that it won't work out...
Honestly, the Hobbs signing reeked of desperation - I feel like it was seen as an overpay even when it happened, and by the time they did it, pickings at the position were pretty slim.
The Banks signing came completely out of left field. But again, people who were way more familiar with Banks' play were questioning paying that much for his level of play. The hope was that his particular skill set would fit better with GB's offense than it did in SF... not so much, unfortunately.
Oh well. It happens. I'm sure they will be looking at both of these with a very critical eye, trying to identify "what did we get wrong" here to try to prevent future similar occurrences... I just hope it doesn't make them think twice in the future...
