Re: Listening to Gannon

Past posts would indicate that at least some of us (me included) felt like the biggest deficiency in some of our past defensive coordinators/systems was that they tried to 'run their system', whether or not they had the players to do it. I think all the way back to McCarthy in 2008 when Slowik's defense wasn't working well at all. He was asked something to the effect of 'what would they be changing from a scheme perspective', and his response was basically "the players have to play better". I also think of how B.J. Raji was totally wasted for years as a 'two-gap run plugger' when his strength was as a disruptive pass rusher. This coordinator appears to be the polar opposite of that. Look at the players, see what their strengths (and weaknesses) are, and tailor your expectations/plans to maximize those strengths and minimize the weaknesses. My honest thought: it's about damned time. IF he holds true to that (I mean, it sounds great, but also sounds very difficult to truly implement), I think it's the single most exciting statement I've heard from any coordinator/coach/GM/etc. the Packers have ever had.
