I still think majority of the reffing complaints are due to the NFL manipulation more than the actual refs...
The refs seem to be used as a tool to help keep games tighter which is why we are suddenly breaking all kinds of records for one score games and more 4th quarter lead changes. And less calls in the last 2 minutes of games.
Refs are not being asked to follow the official rule book but some unofficial and non-public rules.
Which makes for more entertaining games, which makes for more viewers and more money ...
