So here's the question: We can safely assume that Forrest Gregg, Jerry Kramer, Mike Wahle, Chad Clifton, etc... aren't about to step out of a time machine and save us. So.... what do we do? What can the team do, given the personnel they have, to cover for this obvious, glaring weakness?
Here are a couple of thoughts I have:
1. Sub in Jager Burton for either Monk or Jennings. Both Monk and Jennings looked like they didn't belong on the field yesterday. I saw one play in particular where Monk had his arms outstretched, and he slid to his left basically behind the C, and a pass rusher immediately sprinted through the hole Monk created and killed Love. I don't know how that can happen. It was like Monk didn't even see that there was a guy there that needed to be blocked...
2. When running the ball, it needs to be more speed runs to the outside. Those types of plays were about the only runs GB could get going yesterday. But there were way too many runs into the middle, the vast majority of which went absolutely nowhere. Until something gets fixed on the line, I'd cut WAY back on rushes between the tackles.
3. More quick, short passes. When the opposing pass rush is that fierce, you have to get rid of the ball quick. Plays where Love catches the snap and immediately fires to a receiver might not gain 50 yards a pop, but it might gain 4 or 5. Those "replacing the run with the pass" type plays...
4. Move the pocket. They tried some of this, and had some degree of success with it. Need to keep at it.
Anyone else have any thoughts? How do you cover up for a very poor OL?
