if you are looking for just personal protection go see Dave Gomme at E and E kennels in stony plain. He is a good guy, that really tries to work with the dog itself rather than forcing a dog into a method. He also runs a protection club that is focusing on mondio ring.
I really do not recommend Sentry, VERY physically hard on dogs, and super old school. I have known Kevin George for many years, and he is a good man, just really behind in the times. My bff had her GSD in ob class with him, and no word of a lie, he hit this dog with a broom handle.
I have met the guy from K911 once, seems like a nice guy, but in all honestly I think Dave has more experience.
If you want to try sport with the dog, there is a really good group of guys, altho not ubber experienced, out at the Alberta Schutzhund Association (in between Edmonton and Beaumont out on 34th st. Great group of people, supurb field.
There is also the GSD club of Edmonton, but man they are hard on off breeds. But they have STUNNING grounds. I personally don't think they are worth the money to train with.
My club (Edmonton RIngsport Association) is taking a break for the winter, but we will start up again in the April time frame. We train for mainly french ring, with a bit of mondio on the side.
All in all I think you will be in good hands with Dave Gomme.
