St. Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney Australia
Having spent the night in the hospital for observation after a concussion, Jason grabs his bag and heads out to the nurse’s station. He sees Vanessa laying there, her head tilted to the side watching birds fly by the window. She hears him enter the room and turns to look. He walks over as she scoots herself up on a pillow and he gives her a kiss on the cheek. He sits down in the chair beside her bed.
(Jason): Where’s Hans?
(Vanessa): He went to go pick up some fresh clothes for me from the hotel and grab me some lunch. He refuses to let me eat hospital food. He’s so cute!
Jason cracks a small smile. The massive bruising on the side of his face is now deep purple and blackish although the swelling has gone down. They sit in silence for a few moments, both desperate to say something, but trying to figure out if they other even wants to talk about last night or not, and it’s Vanessa who breaks the silence.
(Vanessa): That was very brave of you what you did last night, thank you.
(Jason): I didn’t do anything.
(Vanessa): You stood up for me, and that’s a lot.
(Jason): Yeah, well…you would have done the same for me.
(Vanessa): No I wouldn’t have.
Vanessa looks at Jason with a smile and they laugh together at her joke to lighten the mood. Jason grabs his face, wincing in pain from smiling.
(Jason): Note to self…”no laughing.” No worries though, I’ll be good as new soon. Not going out in public for a while with this mug.
(Vanessa): How long before your jaw…
(Jason): Ughh…don’t remind me. It’s broken in 3 places, and I’ve got to go to the dentist too. They’re a few teeth loose.
(Vanessa): Bastard.
Vanessa looks down at her broken leg in its fresh cast.
(Vanessa): I should have just kept my mouth shut….(she points at Jason) and don’t say I told you so.
(Jason): I’m not. You know I was just messing with ya. You were doing your job. Nobody expected him not to be able to take some criticism. You don’t see anybody else in the locker room throwing temper tantrums like that.
(Vanessa): He broke my darn leg, damn near twisted my arm off, and look at your poor face.
(Jason): Hans must be super pissed. I hope he kicks his ass.
(Vanessa): He hasn’t brought it up. You know how he is. He’s just sat there in that chair making sure I’m okay and brooding. I know he wasn’t ready to talk about it, and I don’t want him going off to do something rash, not with Butch in league with Senester. Honestly…I just want to forget about it and move on.
(Jason): Forget about? Forget about it my ass. I can’t go picking a fight with the guy, but I can sure as hell damage his reputation, and that’s exactly what I’m going to do. If he thought your comments were something, just wait until he hears mine. I’ll make his life miserable.
(Vanessa): That’s not a very good idea Jason. Just let it go.
(Jason): No…it’s a very good idea. I’m sick of people picking on us Vanessa. We’re just doing our jobs out there and someone is always criticizing us, or trying to get physical because they are screw-ups, trying to manhandle us because they can’t get the job done with guys their own size in the ring. To hell with him. You wait until Havoc, you just wait. I’ve got something for him. He’ll regret ever laying a hand on us.
(Vanessa): Jason no…he’ll get what’s coming to him. The boys in the back aren’t as easy to push around as we are. You just wait until he try’s that with one of them. He’ll get put in his place.
(Jason): Look at your leg Vanessa. Look at my face.
Jason turns back to Vanessa who has a worried look on her face.
(Jason): Look…I’m gonna get outta here and head to the airport, but don’t worry. You tell Hans to call me if he needs me… I’m down for anything.
(Vanessa): He’s going to tell you the same thing I just did…to leave it alone.
(Jason): That’s too bad then, cuz I already made up my mind.
(Vanessa): Jason don’t be ridiculous. If he gets his hands on you again, he’ll break more than your jaw, just let it go.
(Jason): I’ve spent my entire life ducking fights. All through school, all I head was “######” this and “######” that. I was bullied like you wouldn’t believe. One day…this was before my parents knew…my mom found a photo of me and my boyfriend. You know the kind you take in those little booths, and you get like 4 pictures for a few bucks? Anyway…my dad was waiting for me when I got home. He beat me half to death Vanessa, and I didn’t fight back. I was in the hospital for a week. I told myself that if the guy who was supposed to love me as his son could do that, then anyone would. I always thought parents are supposed to love their kids no matter what, but I was wrong. I promised myself that I would never again back down from a fight, no matter who it was against. That some way I would fight back, however I could.
Vanessa with tears in her eyes, reaches out and grabs Jason’s hand, understanding his position on things.
(Vanessa): You ever talk to them…your parents?
(Jason): We grew up a wrestling fan family. It had been a while, but I called when I first got the job in HWA. I was so excited about it, and thought that maybe they would be proud of me. My mom answered, and I asked if she saw my debut on the show…I called after because I wanted it to be a surprise. I knew they were watching and would see me. She said “we don’t watch that stuff anymore.” I asked her why and I guess my dad took the phone and he said something about “he should have know it was a fag sport with guys running around in their underwear.” Then he hung up.
(Vanessa): Jason, I’m so sorry. I can’t imagine how that must feel to you, but that doesn’t change the fact that you can’t go off trying to get even with a guy like Butch Parker.
(Jason): I’m not going to be pushed around. But hey….I gotta go. My flight is in an hour and half so I gotta grab a cab to the airport. You guys leaving tonight?
(Vanessa): I don’t know, maybe. I’ll call you when I get back either way.
(Jason): You better woman! Bye!
Jason gives her a peck on the cheek and takes off. Vanessa takes a deep sigh, still worrying about what’s going on in Jason’s head. What big plan does he have for Havoc, and of course about Hans. What is he thinking, and how will he respond. She tries to calm her nerves, her stomach now a bit rumbling from hunger and she knows Hans will be back soon with clean clothes and some delicious grub, as the scene fades to black.
