Horseshoe History: Lee Edward Portwood

While doing research tonight, I came across a familiar name in Kentucky Horseshoes where I did not expect it to be. 1930 in Northern Kentucky was the earliest of horseshoe beginnings in that area of the state with ties to organized pitching. The great George Moore would just begin to organize the "Hollyhock Horseshoe Club" inn Northern Kentucky. The name I came acoss though was LEE EDWARD PORTWOOD. The article luckily used his full name. I remembered his name from Kentucky records during the 1970's. Could this Portwood be related to the Lee Portwood I knew from horseshoe results? Turns out, it was THE Lee Portwood. Lee Edward Portwood was born in 1917 and died in 2013 at 96 years of age. He was a longtime Boone Woods and Burlington club member. I decided to make this post for horseshoe history and a remembrance to Mr. Portwood whose death quietly passed us by in the horseshoe world. The article I mentioned, noted that Lee Portwood would be pitching a finals match of a Boone County tournament vs L.C. Weaver. A gold emblem was to be presented to the match winner in 1930. Lee would have been 13 years old. Later in the KHPA, Lee would become the 1977 Class B State Champion. Below, I have included a link to Lee Portwood's grave, marked with a set of horseshoes, and a photo included.
