Lynyrd Skynyrd

In the early '70s I was faculty advisor for the prom. Connell Norton was prom chairman (as I remember). He went to Atlanta for a band "showcase" where bands seeking prom gigs preformed a couple of songs. He came back with the recommendation we contract a band called Lynyrd Skynyrd. The prom was at the Krannert Center. I remember none of the music they played, I just remember they were awful! I spent most of the evening directing the Vansant brothers to get out of the van, quit smoking those funny cigarettes and get back inside and play. I think they were preparing for their first album and used our prom as a paid rehersal. They would play a song, talk and tune, go outside for a smoke, and play the same song again. I remember talk of Connell and I being burned in effigy. Now all attendees brag (as do I) about having Lynyrd Skynyrd for their prom.
