Ilex pendunculosa is definitely a good choice. There are some around here in z6b that stay nice and green all winter.
Speaking of Ilex, it would be interesting to try I. latifolia with it's large glossy leaves, but it's hardiness may be marginal north of z7a.
Of BLEs I have experience with, I'd say that the Aucubas are my favorite. They are reasonably hardy here, there is quite a selection of different cultivars, and they all have that nice tropical look.
