well, yes we can---though generally very rarely especially on the coast. my brother's tree saw two several day periods of very cold temps last winter and came thru very well

OTOH, here where I have seen numerous days where it was frosty at night and the days never warmed up enough so that some shady areas retained that frost all day. possibly why some of the asiatic dogwoods are somewhat unhappy in my garden in exposed places is that they apparently need LOTS of water even in our cool summers and if they don't get that their foliage looks stressed. plants in part shade don't seem to get that look.
