Snow as an insulator

A lot of us right now are getting another snowfall, and temperatures are forecast to dip below zero later in the week (Fri night), even around New York City. How much warmer do plants remain under a blanket of snow? is it worth the trouble to pile up snow around and cover marginal plants, or am I just risking suffocating /squashing them?
This winter seems to be turning out as bad as last year (the second half, at least... someone must have turned a switch sometime in January and suddenly we are dealing with storm after storm).
So! Short of building a fire Friday night, would snow cover help?
