It depends on the plant. I had a camellia sasanqua survive a brutal winter (-8F low with many sub-zero temps) almost completely buried in snow. The branches that were sticking out died back, everything else looked flawless. I've had some plants though where it tore up branches or squashed them. I've never done it with palms, because my palms were always in an enclosure of some sort.
