I just got back from a 2-week kayaking / snorkeling trip to the Florida Keys and I wanted to share a few photos. I rented a house with several friends in Marathon (Vaca Key). These photos are from right around there - and on neighboring Boot Key. I will post more photos, of other islands, in other posts.
Here's the sunset view from the back of our house:
Despite being on the water, putting our kayaks in could get tricky, because of the tides!
Boot Key, a preserved area, was right across the waterway from us. It is essentially a huge mangrove island, with kayak "trails" inside:
Before exploring the mangroves, we paddled out to a little offshore island, as we do every year.
Here I am checking out a small coconut that I believe I planted here, from a washed up coconut, 2 years ago!
It looked like this last year! (and the year before, was just a coconut, obviously!)
The next day, we headed right into the mangroves on Boot Key:
We got into some tight spaces but managed to wiggle out of them!
Getting out of the kayaks was no picnic!
Back at the rented house, we had a palm jungle right next door to us!
Does anyone know what these taller palms are in the center?
Also saw a lot of these palms - they looked like flimsy Royal Palms but are obviously something else - anyone know the species?:
That's it for now... will post more pics from my trip soon! (this is a Great White Heron, a white form of the Great Blue Heron)
Oh also, I stopped by to see Bill from Massachusetts (Bill MA) in Hobe Sound before going to the Keys.
He is growing this interest variegated Banana in his parent's backyard... forgot the name though!
