The padded cactus with spines is not from the large upright form. It's another species, likely a phaeacantha type or perhaps the hardy engelmannii form. The smaller pad to the right appears to be the upright form since it has little to no spines. Mine appears OK after this winter
I had a few forms of kleinae. One form got huge when I lived in RI but that was plastered against a south facing wall. Perhaps it needs a better micro climate for best results
I'm not sure how my Crapes did since there is no sign of life yet
