First true cold blast of the season

Coming up on Tuesday. I'm forecast (CT shore) to get down to 14 degrees, but locations inland will be in the single digits. I've hardly protected anything so far, so i'll be busy this weekend burlapping and grabbing leaves for mulch.
CT broke the December warmth record by 12 degrees. There are still flowers blooming here, the snapdragons are still going and a yucca sent a flower stalk (which was devoured by deer).
On a side note: I bought a nice magenta winter heath new years eve, and by the next morning half the plant had been chomped by deer. they didn't even eat it, they just sampled it and left the uneaten stems on the ground. Wasteful creatures!. i've also noticed that there are suspicious scars on the trunks of my magnolia tripetala sapling. As if they had been gnawed. The bark is all shredded. grrr
